Kia ora koutou katoa. :)

Reflection:

Today I would give myself a 5/5 for effort and participation in this training because I was able to lead both myself and others knowing that I am capable of gaining the qualities of leadership. Today I was able to take charge of our team Whareware and put our skills and techniques once again, into action. I enjoyed being able to listen to opinions within the team to help communicate and plan how we can play as a team.

He tauira pai tēnei kāraehe nātemea ko mātou ngā rangatahi hei tuku iho ēnei āhuatanga me ēnei tīkanga e para nei te huarahi mo ngā whakatipuranga, e whai ake nei. Heoi, kia mau tonu i ngā āhuatanga pai.

He pai ki te tirohia i te kāraehe hei whakapakari i o mātou whanaungatanga-ā-kāraehe, he tohu pai, he tohu aroha, he tohu manaaki. Ka mutu i tēnei ¨Ma mahi, ka ora, ka piki whakarunga¨.

Nō reira koia tērā ko āku kōrero mo tēnei wā, ko te tumanako kua titia ēnei kōrero ki te ngākau o tēnā, o tēnā. Tēna koutou.

Science Presentaion

Kia ora. in this blog I would like to share with you all my presentation I presented in Science today which was based around a genetic disease. Our task was to find a genetic disease and research about, then create a presentation and present it back to the class. I chose to base my presentation around a genetic disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy also known as DMD is a genetic severe muscle disease. It is inherit as an X-linked recessive pattern. Males have only one copy of the X chromosome from their mother and one copy of the Y chromosome from their father. If their X chromosome has a DMD gene mutation, they will have Duchenne muscular dystrophy. In the early stages , Duchenne muscular dystrophy affects the shoulder and upper arm muscles and the muscles of the hips and thighs. This disease leads to difficulties in movement and to the need for assisted ventilation and premature death. The disease is caused by mutations in encoding dystrophin that prevents and abolishes the productions of dystrophin in muscles. Muscles without dystrophin appear more sensitive to damage, resulting in progressive loss of muscle tissue and function.

I would also like to share with you all my presentation I created, however I have left the korero in the speaker notes. Here I have put a link to my presentation and I hope you enjoy. Thank you

Send It Challenge

Kia ora. In Science we were given a challenge as apart of our current topic we are covering this term which is Forces and Motions. We were given materials and equipment and our task was to create "something" that would send the ping pong. The aim of this challenge was to see who can send the ping pong the furtherest. This activity really challenged my creativity skills in terms of "what" and "how" is my team going to create something that would even send a ping pong ball, however with encouragement and perseverance my team managed to create a catapult in the end that did send the ping pong ball.

My overall review on this challenge is that we made it in the end, managed to work as a team to create something that would send the ping pong AND I enjoyed it.

NZ Etrepeneur

Kia ora. In the past few days I have been working on my NZ Entrepreneur for Social Studies and in this blog I would like to share with you my poster I made about my NZ Entrepreneur.

I chose to base my mahi around a famous entrepreneur by the name of Sir Richard Michael Hill. This entrepreneur is the founder of the well-known jewellery company Michael Hill. Michael Hill is a famous entrepreneur and jewellery designer who has been selling jewellery since 1979. After dropping out of high school at the age of 16 Michael soon went on to pursue a career as a concert violinist, however this did not go on for long as he would have had to start much younger in life to be a noteworthy musician. He then went to work for his uncle at a local jewellery store and then found the idea to create his jewellery store. The biggest obstacle Michael had to face was trying to find a business or somewhere to establish his business in order to pursue a career for jewellery making, he was refused by his uncle when trying to buy his business, so he proceeded to open his own store which later became a huge worldwide selling company.

Social Studies Reflection: Blogging My Learning

Kia ora. We all know that lockdown can be a mix of complex challenges, however there are outcomes to those challenges. In this blog I am going to be blogging about my mahi I have covered so far in Social Studies. The topic for this term is Future Planning and the key aspects we have covered so far are:

  • Career options

  • Top career choice

  • Interview preparation, spiel & recording

So sit back, relax, put your reading goggles on and let me take you on a journey to showcase the awesome learning we do at Bay of Islands College!.

By the time we are teenagers we usually have our goals and our ambitions already figured out, some may become actresses or some may become chefs. I on the other hand had no ambitions at all….just another student at Bay of Islands College-well I thought. I found my passion for what my career is going to look like through Social Studies and this is how it all went .

Career Options:

At the start we looked into career options and our task was to find our top 3 career options, “What do you wanna be when you get older?” “What is your career going to look like?”. I took the https://www.careers.govt.nz/ survey and I found career options that were irrelevant to my standards. I took the survey again, however this time I related the desired questions asked in the survey to my daily life “are you good at communicating with others”, “do you like saving lives?”. From the survey I found that my top 3 career options were

  • Police officer

  • Secondary school teacher

  • Meteorologist

I was very pleased with the results and I thought “why not become a police officer?” save lives, catch criminals! and help to create a safer environment for the community. I proceeded to research about each career option and gain further knowledge about these careers, however I found my passion and this was the start of my journey to achieving this new goal.

Top Career Choice:
Upon finding 3 career options I continued on to my top career choice. In every pathway there's always a start-middle and end, as teenagers it's the middle that matters the most, but for now this is just the start. ”what is your true passion” “what do you desire”. I wanted to become a Police Officer. I took the research information and used it to complete my Top career choice. Writing out my top career choice made me think ahead, “What are you going to sacrifice to pursue this job? “When will all this take place?” It was all about future planning and what I must do in order to pursue a career with the NZ police. I had come to realise at this point that I am not going to just be another student at Bay of Islands College, I am going to become a police officer, a student who will protect her community, just like a hero!. “I have a dream I must chase”.

General things we as teenagers must prepare for before we are faced with the reality of society is being physically, mentally and verbally ready to take on the next chapter in our lives. Adulthood. We all know every parent has been through this, but can we as teenagers take on this challenge when our time comes?. In my opinion YES! No matter the race, ethnicity, culture or religion we are all capable, all it takes is perseverance, “even if I fail, I won't give up”. In adulthood our careers become our reality, however before we are able to pursue any job or career we must go through a process every teenager in today's society tries to avoid. Communication, and how is this relative to any career or job?-Well before you can get a job you must be interviewed. You can't just expect someone to be the right person for a job if you don't even know who they are?, right?.

Interview Preparation, spiel & recording

In social studies we have covered that. Our teacher gave us the opportunity to prepare, write and record what we would look like in a job interview. I took the time to do all three knowing how passionate I am about my future. First the preparation then the spiel and at last. The final product.

Overall Learning

You see, as a student of Bay of Islands College learning is fun and life changing. My overall learning has come a long way. I enjoy the aspects of learning and being able to expand my learning abilities. Ever since I started attending Bay of Islands College I have improved in every core subject of learning, this is to show that the education they offer at this College can turn your dreams into a reality. “Perseverance is the key to succeeding in life” and just to reiterate “We all know that lockdown can be a mix of complex challenges, however there are outcomes to those challenges”. Unfortunately this journey has come to an end, however a new one has just begun.

Leadership and government End of Unit

Kia ora in this blog I am going to be reflecting on our overall topic for this term we did for sst which was Leadership and Government. My understanding of leadership is someone who can lead both self and others, make good decisions and lead with confidence. In my opinion everyone is a leader recalling from my speech i did about leadership. Leaders come from anyone, such as Jacinda Ardern, a prime minister who leads a country or Darth Vader, a fictional character who leads evil. This is what leadership looks like in my opinion. My understanding of democracy is that it is a form of government where society has the right to choose who they want as a government through a voting system. It also plays an important role because it gives a better understanding of what the voting system is and how it works. Government is someone who leads the country (e.g Jacinda Ardern.). They \are the ones who establish the laws and take care of taxes, and the government also supports local governments as well. These concepts give a more in-depth understanding and korero around the overall topic itself. Leadership & Government. These concepts give me a better understanding about what leadership & government is. This topic can lead to outside factors such as leadership within my school where it shows the hiraki which shows who sits where in my school, just like parliament my leadership within my school shows who sits at the top and what rank everyone is alongside the roles each individual holds. This topic was average. I was not focused enough to dig deep because of my manu korero speech, but it wasn’t that challenging. In my project about exploring parliament I had the opportunity to write about a local issue within my community. I chose to fix the playground by the foursquare. I had two decisions to either improve maintenance or reconstruct the playground into a tourist attraction. This can become an action plan for change because this is an issue/action that can make great change in  my community. My overall review on this topic is that I have been educated about Leadership & Government. I have gained a better understanding on how the voting system works, and I have learnt about the different concepts in this topic.

Can a Vaccine really stop Covid.

Kia ora. For my science fair topic I have chosen to based my project around Covid vaccines. I  want to investigate these vaccines to find out if they actually work and if they are reducing the number of Covid cases. I haven't fully invested in this topic YET but I am curious in what you think about it.

Leadership Within My School

Kia ora in this blog I am going to be Reflecting on one of my recent mahi I did, which was leadership within my school. This mahi was to show the roles, responsibilities and positions that are upheld within my school.I have learnt that there are many positions within my school and many responsibilities people hold, for example Whaea Edith the principal of the school who also takes the role as a maths and science teacher, furthermore she is also a part of the Board of trustees as well. This shows that one can hold many roles and have many responsibilities. This Topic can be compared to my Leadership speech because there are some key aspects within both mahi that are relative to each other. Take for instance the leadership roles within the school and the leadership qualities within my speech. They both relate to each other because in my speech I repeatedly elucidate and describe to everyone that “everyone is a leader” “ahakoa te aha”, and using that information for the outcome of the leadership roles within my school truly shows that everyone can be a leader. This research can purely support my learning by giving me a more comprehensive review of the roles within my school, this can also help find my goal as a teenager, whether I wanna take one or more roles in the coming future. This also shows the hard work individuals put into my school to make it a better place and better learning environment, and it also shows how many roles each individual uphold and that “there is no limit to life unless you put a limit in”. My overall review of this topic is that it has shown me that me as a student has an easy job compared to my educators and has shown me that there is more to just coming to school and doing my mahi. My educators and all the individuals that work for this school upheld an important part and is the only reason why this school is successful and as students we should acknowledge that.

Leadership Within My School

Leadership speech

Everyone is a leader, from being a kaitataki wahine/tane in a kapa haka roopu, to a prime minister who leads the country, to a judge in a courtroom, to being an ordinary human you see my point is everyone is a leader. Leaders aren’t just people who know how to lead. Leaders are people who have confidence, leaders are people who know how to make decisions not choices, leaders are people who have comradeship for others, and leaders are people who take responsibility for their actions.

We are all leaders, every single one of us sitting in this room today are all leaders. You don't have to be the best at running or be the best at maths,or  be the best at science to be a leader. You can just be you. “ And what makes you a leader” you may ask well- the little things in life do. The way you dress can influence people into dressing like you, coming to school and just doing your mahi can influence people to be just like you, eating an apple can influence people to eat one just like you. Because it isn't just the greater things that define you as a leader, it is also the little things that's why in physics they quote that “everything matters” because it does.

There are all types of leaders. A prime example is a fictional character named Moana: yes Moana of Motunui, the one who aborted Maui onto her boat and sailed across the sea to return the heart of Te Whiti. Moana was a person who strives with belief and faith, she was passionate about the great stories of her ancestors and believed that there was still hope out there to save her island and people. Moana had a growth mindset, even when Maui left her after they failed to defeat Te Ka, she still had that belief and perseverance that she could make a change. Sure enough she restored the heart and her people could live happily ever after. And that is because she is a true leader. She didn't lead a nation, but she led a demi-god with good decision making and confidence. Another example of a leader is a student at Bay of islands College. This student prioritises the wrong things and has changed kids. They have encouraged kids to do such things in school that can atrociously affect their education, for example fighting and uploading fights to social media, or Persuading kids into doing bad things like drinking and smoking. They have influenced kids to believe that this is real life, the “gangsta” life. There are now kids who dress like them, act like them and think like them  because of the comradeship and leadership they show towards them. And that is another form of a leader.

There are many ways you can be a leader, you can be a variety of different types of leaders, but at the end of the day it all comes down to which path you chose to walk. A special quote from Ruthless herself states that “ you can either give a man a fish, or you can teach a man how to fish” are you going to be the person who gives a man a fish, or are you going to teach a man how to fish because remember, it doesn't matter what path you choose to walk, everyone is leader. Kia ora.

The point of this speech is to show my understanding of what a true leader looks like from my perspective. There are many other views that defines a leader. My perspective is too show that there are a variety of types of leaders out in the world today and that it doesn't matter what path you choose to walk because at the end of the day, everyone is a leader. I used examples of two types of leaders to help define the different types of leaders, enjoy.

Nazi and Schindler List Blog post.

Nazi The Nazi  was a German political party lead by Adolf Hitler. During the time of the economic global depression between 1929 - 1934 the Nazi had risen. The Nazi were not a popular party, about after the government signed the emergency contract it have the Nazi great power over Germany, taking away certain rights from society. The Nazi were bad people, giving false information, killing over 6 million Jews, taking many lives of innocents men, woman and even children. Salerying them and touching them for no reason at all. There is no positive things about the Nazi at all, The only thing they brought to this world was great fear and cruelty. My thoughts on this isn't why would such [people do this especially to another culture. T do not understand why they would target the Jews for no particular reason. But for them to slowly take over in such evil way is just totally cruel I have been educated on this topic, I have gained a better understanding of who these people are and the history they carry behind them. And overall I know how they made huge changes to society today. My question towards the Nazi is did they ever get punished for their actions. Did the Nazi ever realise the pain, the hurt, the fear these Jews had to put up with. Overall I think the Jews Deserve more justice for what they went through during that time. Irt would pay if the Nazi, those people who took the lives of many were put into the shoes of those Jews to feel the pain, the pressure and the journey they went though. Schindler's List The holocaust is the most cruel event that took place back in the WW2 days. It is stated as the most crucial event to ever happen in history taking the lives of over 6 million Jews and almost wiping out a whole population/culture. Oskar Schindler a German industrialist and a member of the Nazi party Saved over 1,100 Jews in  that crisis, and thought to find Justice for the Jews, even though Oskar was very disappointed in the amount of people he saved, he still was credited for what he has done and how it has made a change to today. A positive outcome of this event is how Oskar put his reputation on the line into saving another culture successfully, and how he was credited for his actions. This is to show that He is a leader, someone who has perseverance, someone with compassion and empathy. This can relate today to how we judge others, how we perceive others, how we treat others. Like Oskar we could be saving peoples lives or even better, giving them a reason to live life. My thoughts on this event is how they felt, how the Jews felt being captured and enslaved or even worse “killed”. The emotions they hold within themselves , The children, the adults even the elderly's. How being captured and squashed up in cabins with many people you don't know of. Losing families and watching many people die in front of your very own eyes. The same feeling can relate to society today. The feeling of fear, heart beat rising, confusion. A sign of anxiety. Just like public speaking, it can have the same feeling as being in one of those Jews shoes. Something helpful about this event is how we can judge those Jews, how we perceive them based on what their culture has been through. This information from this event has taught me to be thankful for my family, friends, food and a roof over my head. Because just like the jews there have been many people living in horrible states than what I have been living in. Many other people have experienced more traumatising events than what I have experienced. Something that leaves me curious is what happened to those men who killed. What was the punishment to those who were involve or apart of the Nazi who killed those Jews. Did they get justice? Or did they die in vain?

Space Invader Game Micro-Bit

In Robotics I have been learning about the micro bit. I learnt how to use the micro bit and create unique technology on it. In the past classes I have created a few projects and here is one of my greatest projec6t I have been able to create. This is a space invader game. Here is the layout of what it looks like on the micro-bit.
Controls:
(a) = Move left
(b) = Move right
(a + b) = Shoot

This is it looks like behind the scenes of the space invader project I created. This is where I use various of coding to create this significant project. Enjoy.....

All About Me 2021

Kia ora, my name is Jocelyn and I am a Year 10 student currently attending Bay of Islands College. I am Maori and I am very proud to be one.

I have many things I love to do such as sports because I can challenge myself into stepping out of my comfort zone. I also love art. Art is a place where I can open my mind up and fantasise what I want to draw. It's a hobby where I see happiness through colours whether it is designing, painting, drawing or colouring. My favourite hobby is Science. Science is a hobby that really makes me think outside the box. I personally like Science because it is very interesting to learn about various elements and combinations of liquids and our environmental state with our living organisms and material that surrounds us in this universe.

My goals for this year are to improve my academics and build on from last year. I also want to improve in my science skills and expand my knowledge on what I already know. My last goal for this year is to change my mindset. I would like to have a growth mindset so I am able to set a positive environment for others and encourage them to be leaders.
